This week I travelled to Windsor with eight council colleagues to meet with Ontario’s party leaders, cabinet ministers and MPPs to ensure policy development on the provincial level aligns with our local needs here in London.

One of our city’s most important priorities continues to be securing funding for our SHIFT rapid transit plan. This is the largest infrastructure project our city has ever approved. With London’s contribution set at $129-million, we must obtain the rest of the $500-million needed from the provincial and federal governments.

Events like the Association of Municipalities of Ontario’s Annual General Meeting in Windsor allow for London city councillors and I to meet with these decision makers. I had the chance to sit down with seven cabinet ministers, including Ontario’s Minister of Transportation the Honourable Steve Del Duca, to talk SHIFT.

I also had the opportunity to chair the Mayors of Southwest Ontario meetings with Conservative Leader Patrick Brown and NDP Leader Andrea Horwath, along with many members of their caucuses. The main discussions with our partners at Queens Park continue to focus on infrastructure spending to build a better city, economic development, affordable housing needs and poverty reduction.

Thank you to all who attended on behalf of the City of London and to Mayor Drew Dilkens, Windsor City Council and staff for hosting such a fantastic conference.

As our city councillors and I were in Windsor, our hometown Olympic athletes were competing in Rio at the Summer Games.

We are so proud of every single Canadian athlete. Congratulations to Damian Warner for his bronze in the decathlon and to Lanni Marchant for being the top Canadian in the women’s marathon, right after running the 10,000 meter race. It has been amazing to watch all of our city’s athletes compete at Rio 2016.

I hope you will join me in Victoria Park this Saturday night for the CBC’s live stream of The Tragically Hip’s show in Kingston. Yet another group of people who have truly captured what it means to be Canadian, and by doing so have made us so very proud.

Sincerely,
