London is putting up a strong fight for the largest infrastructure investment in the history of our city — our Rapid Transit initiative, Shift.
This week, Deputy Mayor Cassidy and I travelled to Ottawa to meet with our colleagues from Canada’s largest municipalities at a meeting of the Big City Mayors’ Caucus (BCMC) in Ottawa. BCMC is a part of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities and is made up of mayors of the 21 largest cities in Canada. With a focus on infrastructure investment, transportation and affordable housing, the group continued the discussion about how all levels of government must collaborate to move our cities and our country forward.
While in Ottawa, I had the pleasure of meeting with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. The Prime Minister's message to the mayors was simple: we understand one key to unlocking economic potential in Canada lies with investing in infrastructure in our cities. We also met with several Ministers and MPs including the Honourable Bill Morneau, Minister of Finance, the Honourable Amarjeet Sohi, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, the Honourable Bardish Chagger, Minister for Small Business and Tourism, MP Kate Young, Parliamentary Secretary for Transportation and MP Peter Fragiskatos. I shared more details about Shift and how this investment will transform the way we move across the city and in Southwest Ontario. Partnerships with all levels of government are essential to turning this vision into a reality.
