This week, I had the chance to speak with provincial officials during pre-budget consultations in London about securing funding for housing and homelessness prevention, our life sciences sector and SHIFT Rapid Transit.

Providing safe, affordable housing options for all Londoners is a significant step in helping lift people out of poverty. We know that 17 per cent of Londoners are living in poverty. This is a community issue that can be solved by working together. Municipalities like London need the support of the provincial and federal governments through flexible and predictable funding to make housing available to everyone.

We are the largest city in Canada without a rapid transit system. This transformative project, the largest infrastructure undertaking in our city’s history, would make it easier for Londoners to get to work, school, community centres and libraries or downtown in a more efficient and sustainable way. Meanwhile, our transit plans took another step forward this week with Western University approving a rapid transit route through campus. Western students make up the largest group of transit riders and it is important that we have a transit system that works for everybody. I am pleased that we were able to come to an agreement with our post-secondary partners.

Next Tuesday, these transit plans, along with a number of other topics, will be discussed in my State of the City Address. I am looking forward to giving Londoners an update on the significant progress we’ve made over our first two years in office and all that we can accomplish in the second half of our term. If you can’t be in attendance, you can watch the speech here. Thank you to Streaming Inc. for making this possible.
